Workshop Overview

Aurora Scientific Corp. is organizing an international workshop addressing advanced coating technologies used in the aerospace and oil & gas industries with National Research Council Canada (NRC), Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and MingDao University (Taiwan).

Friction and wear have the economic impact of billions dollars every year in North America only. Recognition of advanced surface technologies by engineers and material scientists is growing and has become the most important element in many engineering components. The workshop goal is to share the newest advanced applications of improved coatings that lead to decreased friction and wear; considerable overall energy reduction; cost reductions caused by in-service failure or maintenance downtime, especially in the aerospace and oil & gas industries.

Experts from top research institutes in Canada, China, United States and Taiwan specialized in material engineering gather in beautiful Calgary to present new technologies for businesses and academia. Company managers, engineers and material scientists are welcome to the workshop that provides an opportunity to demonstrate recent surface technology development progress and industrial applications.

Dr. Xijia Wu

Senior Research Officer, National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Dr. Xijia Wu Zhao is a Senior Research Officer within the Aerospace Portfolio of the National Research Council of Canada. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Ottawa in 1992 and joined the NRC subsequently. His main research interest is on constitutive behavior and life prediction of aerospace materials, particularly gas turbine engine materials and coatings, involving low cycle fatigue, creep, and thermomechanical fatigue. Dr. Wu has authored/co-authored more than 100 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, and given several invited/keynote talks in major series conferences.

Dr. Qian is Senior Manager of AVIC.

Dr. Linruo Zhao

Principal Research Officer, National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Dr. Linruo Zhao is Principal Research Officer with the Aerospace Portfolio of the National Research Council of Canada. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Metallurgy from Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials in 1988 and joined the NRC in 1991. His research focuses on materials and coatings for gas turbine engine applications. His coating-related work includes physical vapor deposition and evaluation of metal nitride erosion resistant coatings, MCrAlY oxidation resistant coatings, and yttria-stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings. Dr. Zhao has authored/co-authored more than 100 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. He is the recipient of 2015-2016 ASM Canada Council Brian Ives Lectureship Award.

Dr. Albert Sue

Materials Technology Consultant

Albert Sue was born in Taiwan. After receiving a BS degree in Physics from Tamkang University in Taipei, he came to the US for advanced studies. He has earned a M.S. degree in Physics from Wright State University at Dayton, Ohio and a Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa.

Since then he had worked for Union Carbide Corporation and Praxair Surface Technologies Inc. as a materials scientist to develop new materials and processes for aerospace application; as an senior materials engineer for Smith International, Schlumberger, and Grant Prideco to develop drill bits; and as a materials R&D manager for National Oilwell to develop erosion/corrosion/wear resistant coatings for oil/gas drilling application. He specializes in materials characterization, CFD analysis, X-ray stress analysis, and innovation of thin film and coating materials and processes (PVD, CVD, HVOF, PTA, laser cladding, plasma spray, thermal spray and fuse, and HP/HT) He has authored 29 technical papers on International Journals and has been awarded 40 U.S patents. Frequently, he reviews technical papers from academic and industrial research institutes submitted for publication for Thin Solid Films, Surface Engineering, and Journal of American Vacuum Society.
Currently, he has provided consultant services for high pressure/high temperature polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) development, hardfacing materials for drilling tools, and other cutting edge materials for next generation drill bits and tools.

Dr. Qi Yang

Senior Research Officer, National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Dr. Qi Yang is a senior research officer at the Structures, Materials and Manufacturing Laboratory of the Aerospace Portfolio, National Research Council of Canada. He received his PhD in materials engineering from the University of Alberta in 2000. Having been involved in materials research for more than 25 years, Dr. Yang has developed his expertise in the fields of surface engineering, nanostructured coatings, hard coatings for wear and erosion protections, materials characterizations and applied electrochemistry. He has published more than 65 well cited journal papers, were frequently invited by more than 15 prestigious journals to review more than 70 papers, and served as session chairs in international conferences. Dr. Yang is currently leading several projects in developing advanced coatings for aerospace applications. Working closely with industrial partners, he makes continuous efforts in developing and optimizing coating deposition processes to overcome technical challenges related to coating commercialization. As an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, he has co-supervised several Master and PhD students.
